Metaphor ReFantazio TAA Mod – Antialiasing FIX for PC and Steam Deck

If you’re frustrated by the lack of antialiasing in Metaphor: ReFantazio, I have good news: I managed to compile a mod that adds TAA (temporal antialiasing) to the game. Unfortunately, it’s not perfect, as the text and UI suffer from slight ghosting, and enabling it can noticeably impact performance. Metaphor looks stunning with the mod, and the overall image stability in motion is vastly improved. Now with updates UI looks much better!

Alternative Improved HUD [Preset 2]

I don’t have a 1080p screen, so I’m not sure how it performs in that resolution, but it’s really good in 4K and works well at 1440p too.

Before we begin, I highly recommend downloading the Metaphor FIX mod first and using it to disable the excessive motion blur. Additionally, I turned off character outlines, increased the draw distance, and improved shadow quality on my setup.

My Metaphorfix.ini looks like this:

;;;;;;;;;; Graphics ;;;;;;;;;;

[Custom Resolution Scale]
; If not set to 1, overrides in-game resolution scale with your custom value.
; Valid range: 0.1 to 4.0. Default = 1
Resolution = 1

[Disable Dash Blur]
; Set to true to disable the radial blur and speed lines when dashing.
Enabled = true

[Disable Outlines]
; Set to true to disable the black outlines on characters.
Enabled = true

[Ambient Occlusion]
; By default, ambient occlusion runs at full resolution (1.0) even with higher resolution scale settings.
; This option allows you to adjust the ambient occlusion resolution independently of the game’s resolution scale to achieve increased performance.
; Valid range: 0.1 to 1.0. Default = 1
Resolution = 1

[LOD]
; Adjust distance value higher to increase draw distance.
; Valid range: 1 to 100. Default = 10
Distance = 50

[Shadow Quality]
; Set shadow resolution.
; Valid range: 64 to 16384. Default = 2048
Resolution = 4086

Metaphor ReFantazio TAA Mod – version 1.4

Metaphor TAA Mod 1.5 for 16:9 Resolutions

Changelog

  • minor sharpness corrections
  • more stability of character when the camera rotates slowly – total ghosting cannot be eliminated
  • UI fixes in the upper right corner
  • as of now, one version of the mod is compatible with all 16:9 resolutions (others are not planned, you will also find a version for Steam Deck below)
  • it is possible that the mod will work properly in Ultra Wide resolution as long as the HUD has the same position as in 16:9
  • this is probably the last update of the mod – if you want you can go to the configuration panel after pressing [Home] and play around on your own – some people like the image without Gaussian Blur better, so just uncheck it [personally, I don’t know if I prefer it with or without anymore, but after turning it on, I feel like there’s less ghosting because it’s hidden by the slight motion blur]

If you want a much lighter AA then you can check out another author’s mod – it has stable HUD and retains more detail, but the image stability is definitely way less effective. I tried to get more out of it and/or combine it with my techniques, but I didn’t achieve anything in this field. For those sensitive to blur and ghosting, this could be an interesting option, as it works better than regular FXAA or SMAA after all.

Additionally, I’ve prepared a preset for the Steam Deck, but its resolution and performance are too low for this mod. However, if you’d like, you can still test it out. Just extract the files in the game’s folder. Game seems to be playable with TAA at 800p30FPS.

Metaphor TAA Mod 1.5 UI FIX (Steam Deck 800p RESOLUTION ONLY!) – for 720p first install Steam Deck Preset and then normal one with file override.

For Metaphor FIX to work on the Steam Deck, after pasting its files, you’ll need to add a launch command: WINEDLLOVERRIDES="winmm=n,b" %command%

Here, I recommend disabling only the blur and possibly the character outlines. You can also try lowering the quality of ambient occlusion to 0.5 (AO) and shadows to 1024 for better performance.
